Continuing its 42nd Season Vallejo Music Theatre will present Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera The Pirates of Penzance at its temporary theater at 823 Marin Street in Vallejo in October. The show is directed by Sheila Atwater, with musical direction by Donald Atwater, both from Vallejo. Choreographer is Jo Nash of Benicia. The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty, is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of the Savoy Operas. The opera's official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on December 31, 1879, where the show was a hit with audiences and critics. The London premiere was on April 3, 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York. Pirates remains popular today, taking its place along with The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore as one of the most frequently played Gilbert & Sullivan operas. Its 1981 Broadway revival by Joseph Papp ran for 787 performances and spawned many imitations. The cast includes William Alterton of Dixon as Fredrick, the orphan raised by the Pirates; Wayne Goodman of Vallejo as The Major General, Jeff Loew of Vallejo as the Pirate King, Arie Singer of Berkeley as Mabel, Kathleen Kravets of Vallejo as Edith, Dan Garfinkle of Lafayette as Samuel, Perrin Rynning of Vallejo as the Sargeant of Police. Other cast members include Gene Cismowski of American Canyon, Lee Ann D’Amato, Kevin DeCaccia, Jacqueline Decker, Aaron Koford, Robert Kravets, Kiernan Morgan, Steve Morgan, Jennifer Preciado, Aileen Weddell, Karie Weeden and Rebecca of Vallejo, Ella Pennington of Benicia and Patricia Herrington of Napa. A Fund Raising Backer’s Night preview will be held September 19, at 823 Marin Street featuring leads from the show and dinner for $20. The evening begins at 6:00 PM with a reception; dinner at 7:00 PM and the preview at 8:00 PM. The traditional Show Gala will be held October 4 with reception & silent auction beginning at 6:00 PM, dinner catered by The Original City Lights Catering Service will be served at 6:30 PM and curtain at 8:00 PM. Cost for the gala is $60 per person. Remaining shows are: evening October 3, 10, 11, 17, 18 at 8:00 PM and three matinees October 5, 12 & 19. Admission is $23 general, $20 fixed income & military and $15 students, children 5 & under are free. A Costume Contest & Sing-Along will be held Saturdays October 11 & 18.
